Recently, on the occasion of 60 years of democratic reform in Tibet, CCTV broadcasted an exclusive series of reports, namely, Protect the Millennium Treasure-Potala Palace, which was jointly produced by the CCTV News Center, the Tibet Autonomous Region Cultural Relics Bureau, the Potala Palace Management Office, and the Chinese Cultural Heritage Institute. For the first time, the world's cultural heritage Potala Palace's best protection methods are fully displayed.

In mid-summer 2016, in order to adapt to the needs of cultural heritage protection under the new situation, the refined surveying and digitalization project of the ancient buildings of the Potala Palace was officially launched, and a comprehensive medical examination of the Potala Palace was conducted from multiple angles. Digsur’s cultural heritage protection division is responsible for the acquisition and data processing of the refined surveying and mapping data of the Potala Palace. The initial results of the refined surveying and mapping were unveiled at the Shanghai Construction Expo in 2017. Widely concerned, the digital achievements of the Potala Palace in the CCTV report is one of the important achievements of the fine surveying and mapping of the Potala Palace.

     The Potala Palace, as the largest group of Tibetan palaces in the world, is self-evident in importance, so daily protection is particularly important. The refined surveying and mapping results extracted the bedrock and carried out the red mountain fitting to clarify the mutual relationship between the main body of the building and the bedrock, the expression of the internal structure of the building, and serve the preventive protection measures of the ancient building complex of Potala Palace; The mapping data is also applied to the 3D visualization platform. We used BIM technology to systematically manage the information parameters of the 3D model of the building, expressing the details of the internal structure of the building and the relationship between the structures in detail, sharing information, and establishing LOD models for different needs to provide data support for the intelligent operation and maintenance, daily management and information management of the Potala Palace. The successful implementation of the refined surveying and digitalization project of the ancient architectural complex of Potala Palace and the practical application of refined surveying and mapping results have taken solid steps in the exploration of the protection of cultural heritage under the new situation.
